About
The beauty and complexity of nature has always fascinated me.
It is my paradise and refuge anywhere I go and at every stage of my life.
There is something magical awaiting in every second we stop and contemplate nature.
And there is a deeper appreciation and understanding that emerges from painting nature.
I am a biologist and environmental manager by education, and a naturalist and an artist at heart. During my studies I completed short courses on technical, mechanical and scientific drawing. These courses introduced me to black and white drawing using pencil and ink.
The scientific drawing lecturer was a professional scientific illustrator. During one of the classes he showed us a watercolor painting of a shell. It was simple, elegant, and portrayed all the subtle tones of pink, greys and browns characteristic of that species; the same I found washed in the sands of my country when I was a child. Painting was outside of the scope for the course, but he still encouraged me to get watercolors. I did. And then I stored them away for years.
I did my first watercolor painting in 2010, of a crab from the beautiful beach town of Chuao, Venezuela. This painting adorns the walls of my friend’s house in Germany, and has been a piece of home away from home.
My journey as a self-taught watercolorist really took off when I stopped being so precious about the paints and the outcome. I decided that later might be too late. I let curiosity take the lead, and dared to play.
I wanted to see what would happen when mixing different colors, experiment with the water to paint ratio, see how different colors work together in a piece. I wanted to know everything about every pigment, and the properties of every paint. This is how I started creating abstract artwork, that fills my heart with joy because I get to fully experience the colors, how the paper takes the paint from my brush, how the paint moves…
There is still much to learn, and so much I want to paint. But now I am ready to share.
It will be an honor to know that my creations bring some joy to your life.
Perhaps you will dare take the dust off your dreams, stop waiting for a “better” time, and make now the time to play and create.
